Sevilla FC Recent Success
Thankfully, Sevilla have enjoyed success in recent years, particularly with a stint under former Arsenal man, Unai Emery. Emery managed Sevilla for three and a half years. In that time winning three Europa leagues consecutively, along with strong league campaigns. Unfortunately, Unai Emery then left for Paris Saint Germain in June 2016.
The 2018/19 season saw Sevilla start with head coach Pablo Machin, and finish the season with Joaquin Caparros as a caretaker from the 15th March. Sevilla finished 6th in La liga, made it to the quarter finals of the Copa del Rey, finished runners up in the Supercopa de Espana and were knocked out of the Europa league in the last 16. Their top goalscorer was Wissam Ben Yedder with 18 goals in the league. Their spending for the 2018/19 season was 76 million Euros and their total income from transfers was 90 million Euros.
With 27 games played, Sevilla are having a tremendous season. Currently sitting 3rd with 47 points, it’s looking like Sevilla are going to qualify for the Champions league this time round! Sevilla crashed out of the Copa del Rey in the round of 16, losing 3-1 to Segunda division side Mirandes. Currently awaiting for the game to be rescheduled, Sevilla drew AS Roma in the Europa league round of 16. Julen Lopetegui is the head coach, after being appointed in June 2019. Over the 19/20 season Sevilla have spent a whopping 176 million Euros, and accumulated 123 million Euros from outgoings.
Sevilla FC Present Team
Nowadays Sevilla likes to have plenty of the ball, with an average of 58% possession in La Liga. That’s 3rd behind Barcelona and Real Madrid. As well as playing possession football, Sevilla’s favored formation is 4-3-3, comparable to Barcelona and Real Madrid. Sevilla like to dominate the game, creating plenty of chances and having a great deal of shots on target.
Ever Banega has been one of Sevilla’s main men ever since returning in 2017. The Argentinian has the highest average match rating for Sevilla with a 7.2. He also has the highest amount of assists with six. However, being 31 years of age Ever Banega is starting to experience the decline of his career.
Another key player and yet another Argentine, is Lucas Ocampos. He has 10 goals and 2 assists with an average match rating of 7.1 just behind Banega. The right winger has a taller build standing at 188 cm and a market value of 21 million Euros. Maybe we’ll see a club make a move for him in the summer.
The third and final player we’re going to mention is Sergio Reguilon, the 23 year old who is on loan from title rival Real Madrid. This Spaniard has 1 goal and 4 assists in 22 games. Reguilon has been pivotal in Sevilla’s defence this season. Sevilla have conceded the fifth least goals this season in La liga with 1.1 per game.
