Famous Player

Xabi Alonso is a notable name when it comes to Real Sociedad. The Spaniard came up through Sociedad’s youth ranks, making 39 appearances for La Real’s youth team and 114 appearances for the first team between 1999 and 2004, before leaving for Liverpool in the summer of 2004. Alonso had an admirable career, winning 1 World Cup, 2 European championships, 2 Champions Leagues, 1 FA Cup, 1 La Liga title, 3 Bundesliga titles and many, many more. Xabi Alonso was also known for his long range strikes, scoring some spectacular goals in his illustrious career.

Recent Recovery

Unfortunatly, Real Sociedad haven’t won any significant silverware this century. That being said La Real fell just short in 2003, finishing 2nd. Sociead suffered relegation in the 2006/2007 season finishing a lacklustre 19th place, this saw Sociedad have a 3 season stint in the Segunda division before winning the division in 2009/2010. Despite a disappointing deterioration in the noughties, Sociedad have had top 6 finishes and haven’t finished lower than 12th in La liga since the 2010/2011 season. La Real played Champions league football in 2013/2014 but underwent a disappointing collapse, as they finished 4th in the group stage.

  18/19 Season

The 2018/2019 season saw Sociedad start the season with head coach Asier Garitarno and finish the season with Imanol Alguacil. La Real finished 9th in La Liga, made it to the round of 16 of the Copa del Rey and had no European football to compete in. Their top scorer was the young Mikel Oyarzabal, netting the ball 12 times in the league. Their spending for the 2018/2019 season was 17 million Euros and their total income from transfers was 40 million Euros.

19/20 Season

Being 27 games in, Sociedad are having a considerable campaign in the league sitting at 4th place with 46 points. Sociedad have made it to the Copa del Rey final, but will we see La Real win their first major trophy of the decade? Don’t hold your breath. Imanol Alguacil is the current head coach. Sociedad have managed to spend 18.25 million over the 19/20 season and their total income from transfers is 9.5 million.

Real Sociedad Playing Style

Sociedad don’t have any complications on the goal scoring front, with 45 goals in 27 games, Sociedad are the 3rd top scorers in La Liga. La Real are another team that love to have hold of the ball, with an average of 56% in the league, ranking them 4th in La Liga. However finishing may be a problem for Sociedad with 33 big chances missed, which ranks them 5th in the competition. It could be said Sociedad are more on the disciplined side, with 8.3 tackles per game ranking them 18th.

Key Players

Martin Odegaards

Martin Odegaards, the Real Madrid loanee has the highest average match rating in the Sociedad squad with a 7.26. The Norweigian player has netted 4 times and has 5 assists. Odegaard is seen by many as a failed wonderkid, however being one of Sociedad’s best players at 21 years of age isn’t bad going. Is there a future for Odegaard at Real Madrid?

Mikel Oyarzabal

Mikel Oyarzabal is another fantastic young player that has impressed for Sociedad this season. The left midfielder has an average match rating of 7.07, with superb 8 goals and 6 assists. Oyarzabal is just 22 and has a market value of 52 million Euros, will we see a big move in the summer?

Nacho Monreal

The third and final player we are going into mention is veteran fullback, Nacho Monreal. Whilst being a fragile 34 years of age, the ex Arsenal man brings vast amounts of experience to the Real Sociedad backline. Monreal has scored twice and has an average match rating of 6.62.
